Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Limited (TRDCL) is implementing the first intra-city project in the country, with a mandate to develop the road network in Thiruvananthapuram on an annuity basis. The project consists of improvements to be made to the city's roads by way of development of ten corridors and three NH-bypass links totaling 42 km.

Innovations and Impact

  1. The solar-powered traffic signals are GPS enabled, facilitating smooth vehicular movement along corridors. The energy-efficient lighting fixtures have a 15-year lifespan, optimizing initial cost and replacement cost.
  2. TRDCL added lush green traffic islands to add to the junctions making Thiruvananthapuram one of the most homogenously beautified cities. In some of the traffic islands, fruit-bearing plants and bushes were planted to attract local bird species.
  3. Site personnel worked very closely with local residents and media to change public perception of the project from being a hindrance to a boon to the city. This approach helped overcome considerable resistance that TRDCL faced during implementation, and in fact resulted in making the citizen a partner in the project, contributing greatly to the project's ultimate success.
