| While bamboo based economic activities are playing an important
role in the economy of Tripura, their potential is significantly
greater. The bamboo sector has been handled in the artisan
mode rather than being approached as an industry. Thus, the
large potential of the bamboo based industry in terms of wealth
creation and employment opportunities remains unexploited.
The estimated value of the bamboo industry market in Tripura
is Rs.70.00 crores per annum and with appropriate sectoral
intervention, it has potential to grow up to Rs.400 crores
per annum in next five years
The Govt. of Tripura has, therefore, decided to adopt a mission
approach for holistic development of the bamboo sector. This
would be a market-driven approach with a mechanism to connect
the whole value chain from the raw material to finished product
and finally to the end user market with thrust on areas such
as handicrafts, industrial products and utility items. Tripura
Bamboo Mission, launched for a period of 3 years, is expected
to Double output from the sector in turnover terms and double
employment opportunities in the sector. This would also lay
the foundation for scaling up the initiative in other states
and to play an important role in the proposed National Bamboo
Mission worth Rs. 5000 million
The scope of services to be provided by IL&FS would include
preparation of an integrated Mission Action Plan, Mobilisation
of funds from various stakeholders for implementation of the
Action Plan, Implementation of the Action Plan
The project would allow IL&FS to play the role of a coordinator
with various stakeholders, many of them proposed to be international
agencies. The project is another example of cluster development
initiative on commercially sustainable PPP format
