India has 12 major and 200 minor and intermediate ports, along 7,517 km of mainland
coastline. Seaports handle 95% of India’s foreign trade in volume terms
and 70% in value terms. Major ports accounted for 530 million tons (72%) of the
total cargo traffic of 738 million tons in FY2008. Minor ports (largely captive
private jetties) accounted for 28% of total cargo, or 208 million tons in FY2008
During 2004-2009, average cargo traffic growth was 11% and 8.5% at small ports
and major ports, respectively. Over the five year period from 2004-05 to 2008-09,
traffic at Indian ports grew at a CAGR of 9.1 per cent. Although port efficiency
has improved over the past five years, the overall efficiency is still below
international standards
