Supporting the Ghazipur Slum Kids
Located in the catchment area of IL&FS Environment’s Waste to Energy Plant, Panchi is a place for learning and freedom of expression for children of the Ghazipur slum. It provides age-appropriate bridge education to improve enrolment chances of out-of-school children between the ages of 5 and 11. Panchi also works to improve school attendance of children aged 5 to 14 years who are already in the nearby government schools, by providing them remedial education.
Children study English, Mathematics, Science and Hindi according to their school syllabus, with special attention to improve their reading and writing skills. Multimedia kits and technology are used liberally. Extra-curricular activities like karate, dance, theatre and craft are woven into the Panchi curriculum to help build interest in learning, and give the children an opportunity to discover their hidden talents. Now in its third year, Panchi has enrolled 150 children, with 50 children mainstreamed into schools.
